Can a man ever forget his past? Can’t someone be forgiven for their sins if they, OK, sure, once tried to subjugate all of humanity and worked for a big evil space grape but, most importantly, also truly changed their spots by saving the multiverse and becoming… I don’t know, God or something (it’s kinda unclear)? In the case of Marvel’s Loki, aka the God of Mischief himself Tom Hiddleston, the answer is apparently no.

The MCU has taught us that wherever Asgardians go terrible storms tend to follow, on of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor being the god of hammers lightning, and now it seems this trope has crossed over into real life, too. Poor Hiddleston has been blamed for causing the storm that cut out the power in a pub, which he happened to be drinking in at the time.

The 43-year-old star — who shares a child with his fiancee, fellow MCU performer Zawe Ashton — went for a meal with friends and family at The Pub With No Name in Hampshire this week. Unfortunately for Hiddleston and his fellow diners, Storm Darragh — which just raged its way through the U.K. — decided then was the perfect time to strike, framing him for a bit of Loki-like trickery.

Laura Walsha, a kitchen porter for the pub, told BBC News that she jokingly accused the star of being responsible, telling “him that he caused the chaos.” The actor, she recalled, “utterly denied it of course, but I wasn’t convinced.” To be fair, it is a little suspicious that the storm only struck after Hiddleston and his party had already gotten their meals. “Obviously it put an end to our normal service because we couldn’t keep the kitchen running but Tom managed to finish his dinner,” Walsha added.

According to BBC News, Walsha explained that the pub’s staff lit candles and had a fire blazing to help the patrons enjoy the rest of their food and their drinks before they got themselves safely back indoors. Honestly, that sounds like how they used to do it on Asgard, so Hiddleston probably felt right at home.

When he’s not asking his brother to play pranks on innocent pubs, Hiddleston has been busy starring in horror maestro Mike Flanagan’s latest movie, The Life of Chuck, based on the Stephen King novella of the same name. If that trifecta of talent wasn’t enough to entice, then how about the fact that it co-stars the likes of Karen Gillan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Mark Hamill? That one is on its way to theaters in May 2025.

As for his much-anticipated return as Loki, that the character is in his time tree era right now, so live-action appearances may be limited for the foreseeable future, unless Avengers: Doomsday can make that right. If animation floats your boat, though, then you’re in luck, as Hiddleston will be lending his voice to an animated variant of the Asgardian in What If…? season 3, dropping daily on Disney Plus starting Dec. 22.

These include the time Andrew Garfield, who was then cast as Spider-Man in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, crashed a at SDCC in 2011, or when the Avengers first assembled onstage in front of fans the same year.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice may be the big horror release of the week on a theatrical level, but the Toronto International Film Festival is set to upstage it with a Stephen King adaptation that could not possibly be less Stephen King-coded.

This is The Life of Chuck, a post-apocalyptic drama film based on King’s 2020 novella of the same name. Per Vanity Fair, King was skeptical about the mileage of a Life of Chuck adaptation, but having now seen the film, he described it as “a happiness machine.” King’s review, of course, is the most important one of all, so The Life of Chuck couldn’t be off on a better foot here.

Of course, the artistic firepower behind the production has long suggested a homerun. Tom Hiddleston headlines a cast that also features Mark Hamill, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan, Matthew Lillard, David Dastmalchian, Carl Lumbly, and Heather Langenkamp. Weaving it all together is writer-director Mike Flanagan, who Netflix subscribers will recognize as that horror storyteller that you should never, ever bet against (see: The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Fall of the House of Usher).

The Life of Chuck follows—surprise surprise—a man named Chuck, whose mundane yet profound life takes center stage as the world begins to literally fall apart. What sets The Life of Chuck apart from its post-apocalyptic brethren, however, is its very pure commitment to hope. The end of the world isn’t played as a disaster worthy of all of our screams, but as an upheaval of social pressure that allows human beings to speak to each other with unprecedented sincerity.

If that sounds timely, that’s because it is. As Flanagan puts it in the same Vanity Fair article, “the sense that [our society] is breaking down, that the world is moving on, has been increasingly palpable.” He makes particular note of the degradation of politics, which has indeed mutated into a horrifically combative machine that exists to divide rather than unite.

The Life of Chuck, then, has preemptively marked itself not as a call to action, but a call to permission. Permission to love one another and cherish the feeling of pure experience. To be fearless about owning our insecurities, whether they’re trivial or existential. To relentlessly seek out life’s beauty both in spite of and because of life’s pain.

Indeed, it’s a far cry from the usual Flanagan meal, but The Life of Chuck might just also be exactly the one we all need. The film will premiere at TIFF on Sept. 6, where it will hopefully be picked up by a major distributor.

A lot of characters and stars have come and gone across the MCU’s lifespan to date, and very few of them have stuck around from Phase One up until Phase Five. Arguably the most notable of these Marvel mainstays is Tom Hiddleston‘s Loki, who has enjoyed one of the most transformative arcs of anyone in the entire cinematic universe.

From sympathetic villain to full-on world-conquering villain to anti-hero to actual hero, Loki has been and done everything across his 13 years and counting in the MCU, but why is it that the God of Mischief has struck such a chord with fans and audiences around the world? Hiddleston himself had much to say about this when asked about the malleability and the immortality of Loki as a character, crossing the Norse myths to the pages of Marvel comics to the present-day. The Thor actor told ComicBook.com:

“I’ve realized that, in human consciousness, that’s who Loki is. Loki is this ancient, mythic character who, in our collective mythology, represents the trickster, the transgressor, the boundary-crosser, the shape-shifter. Somebody who’s mercurial and spontaneous and unpredictable, who will always confound your expectations and wriggle out from underneath your certainties and convictions. Someone who we need and [who] is necessary.”

“Maybe Loki escaping death a couple of times is sort of an emblem of who he is in our culture. I spend a lot of time thinking about Loki. You can probably tell.”

Tom Hiddleston arguably knows his character better than any other MCU star

That’s a bold claim, I know. You could easily argue that honor belongs to Robert Downey Jr. instead and I would gladly listen to your argument, but at this point Hiddleston’s boundless enthusiasm and adoration for his character and deep understanding of what makes Loki tick has been proven again and again.

Most recently, it was Hiddleton himself who came up with the idea for Loki to quote himself from 2011’s Thor at the end of the Loki season 2 finale, which saw the character finally sacrificing himself for the greater good. The dialogue choice was such a perfect encapsulation of Loki’s complete character arc — not to mention proof that Hiddleston has an eidetic memory for all of his prior MCU appearances — that it’s genuinely shocking that it wasn’t scripted.

Loki’s place in the MCU is in flux right now, of course, seeing as he’s currently the God of Time and we’ve been told that the Loki TV show is over. With Hiddleston’s continued commitment to the role and this universe, though, Marvel had better bring him back soon. Luckily it sounds like he might be due a return in Avengers 5.

The only major war brewing in the superhero sphere this year is simply Marvel Studios versus a general sense of apathy, but 2025 will be home to a comic book film battle of the likes cinema hasn’t seen for years. That July will play host to both Superman: Legacy, the first chapter in the shiny, new DCU, and The Fantastic Four, easily the most anticipated MCU release behind Deadpool 3 (more on that in a moment). Who knows who will win that war, but James Gunn has arguably won the opening salvo…

Valentine’s Day saw the announcement of The Fantastic Four cast, albeit via a curious piece of promo art. The film’s arch-foe, Superman: Legacy, has now done one better as a full cast photo has been released showcasing our first look at the new Man of Steel and company all together. What’s more, it’s come with the news that filming will begin at long last before February is over. In contrast, Fantastic Four won’t start shooting until August, giving it a serious impediment against the DC film. They say preparation is half the battle, so in that case it looks like Legacy is already 50% of the way to victory.

Marvel actors have to be extremely careful how they word anything, for fear of the wrong adjective or syntactical structure giving away a major spoiler. Franchise veteran and God of Time that he is, Tom Hiddleston knows this all too well. And yet he’s still managed to kickstart a theorizing frenzy with his response to whether he’ll be in Deadpool & Wolverine. Although he did promise “I truly don’t know,” the Loki star then teased “I might not be allowed to tell you,” which is now the bit that everyone’s paying attention to. Keep calm, people, but we might be in for the Asgardian/X-Men team-up we never dared dream of.

Blade reboot delayed until 2026? Here’s where Mahershala Ali could show up instead

What’s happening with the Blade reboot? The new movie is taking so long to get here we’re left to assume Marvel’s been too busy attending blood raves to produce it. The good news is that, rumor has it, Mahershala Ali could make his proper post-Eternals cameo MCU debut before that film eventually crawls its way out of its tomb. Take this with a pinch of salt — or maybe a dash of holy water, in this case — but intel indicates Ali will lend his voice to Marvel Zombies, the Disney Plus series that you had totally forgotten was even a thing (it’s OK, we all did). Talk about dead things coming back to life!

From The Marvels achieving streaming stardom to the ongoing Bear-ification of the MCU, Marvel news doesn’t lie still in its grave for long, so don’t go anywhere.

Twelve years ago Tom Hiddleston made his debut as Loki in Thor. Few would have anticipated his story would still be unfolding after so many years, and nobody could have predicted the mind-bending conclusion to Loki season 2. Not bad considering Hiddleston originally auditioned to play Thor himself way back in the earliest days of the MCU.

Over that time Hiddleston’s Loki has attempted to invade Earth, been responsible for his mother’s death, reconciled with his brother Thor and, courtesy of the Avengers screwing with time in Endgame, became entangled in a multiversal battle to save the fabric of time.

Loki’s saga came to an epic end in the season 2 finale, with him concluding his character arc by getting the throne he’d always dreamed of, though with the twist that he can never leave it. Loki is now at the heart of Yggdrasil the world tree, ensuring that the multiversal timelines will no longer fall into chaos.

But is this really the end of Tom Hiddleston’s long MCU journey?

Will Loki return?

It’s worth underlining that the Loki we’ve been following in the show is just one variant and that there are now an infinite number of other Lokis out there in various forms and guises. At least one is an alligator so we know they don’t all look like the Loki we know and love, but President Loki proved there will be many resembling Hiddleston’s version of the character. As such it’d be fairly straightforward for a multiversal Loki variant to be written into a story, though whether that’ll actually happen remains to be seen.

It also seems that there are no plans for Loki season 3. In an interview with Cinemablend Head Writer Eric Martin said he considered the story is now complete:

“We approached this as like two halves of a book. Season one, first half. Season two, we close the book on Loki and the TVA. Where it goes beyond that, I don’t know. I just wanted to tell a full and complete story across those two seasons.”

Our take is that if Loki were to return it’d likely be a very different version of the character, perhaps a version of the comics ‘Kid Loki’ that we briefly saw in Loki season 1 that could team up with the Young Avengers?

Sylvie’s fate is also unclear. She’s finally gotten the freedom she craved and seems able to travel wherever she wants via TemPad. It’s plausible that Sophia di Martino could fill Hiddleston’s shoes in future Thor movies and it’d be very interesting to see Thor dealing with a female version of his long-lost brother. Di Martino was so fun as the character it’d be a shame if her journey ended here, so fingers crossed Kevin Feige can find a way for her Loki to pop up in a future story.

Will Tom Hiddleston be back?

It’s possible that Hiddleston could be back as Loki in just a few months. What If…? season 2 has two episodes that could feasibly feature him: “What if… Odin & Hela had faced Wenwu?” and “What if… Avengers had fought Surtur?” Hiddleston is not currently confirmed for the season 2 cast, but given that he voiced Loki in several season 1 episodes we wouldn’t be surprised to see him back here too.

Beyond that? It’s not looking so good. Hiddleston has given no indications whether he’d return for any future MCU movies or TV shows and right now it’s difficult to see where he’d fit in. This Loki may potentially play a role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars if we see Kang’s destructive multiversal war. However, it’d take a lot of exposition to explain who the God of Time Loki is to audiences who didn’t tune in for the Disney Plus show.

So, for now, let’s assume Loki season 2 is Tom Hiddleston’s final bow as the god of mischief. It’s a heck of a way to exit the stage and Tony Stark suddenly has a contender for the most heroic action in the long history of the MCU. But… all we really want to say is “encore!”.

Once an all-too-achievable goal, Marvel Studios is finding it increasingly tricky to cross that coveted $1 billion mark at the box office. Take The Marvels, for example. In a year where Barbie became an international sensation, you’d think the MCU’s own fun feminist-flavored family-friendly franchise installment would fly something fierce.

Unfortunately, it’s endured the lowest-grossing opening weekend of any Marvel movie. All that is to say that Marvel is unlikely to let its next best shot at a billion slip through its fingers…

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is feared to be scrapped, but don’t cry for Kang just yet

Hold in those tears for a sec, but, yes, it is being rumored that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty could be scrapped as writer Jeff Loveness (Quantumania) is believed to have been removed from the project because Marvel is “likely” moving away from the whole Kang bizz. On the flip side, Loki producer Kevin Wright is claiming that a new writer, Loki‘s own Michael Waldron, has been brought on to pen both Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. We’re not entirely sure how those two facts square up, but it’s very possible Kang is on his way out. But, rest assured, there will no doubt be some kind of Avengers 5 coming in May 2026, it just might be getting reconceived from the ground up.

Tom Hiddleston says it would be “unwise” to rule out a return for Loki, despite that climactic season 2 cliffhanger

Moving over to Loki Land, the deliriously acclaimed Disney Plus series delivered a heck of a definitive ending to the beloved character’s storyline in its season 2 finale, when Loki ascended to newfound (proper) godhood and took over from He Who Remains, shacking up in a big ol’ time tree to oversee the multiverse for all eternity. So it’s a little surprising that Tom Hiddleston is telling us it would be “unwise” to count out further appearances from the former God of Mischief. To be fair, Hiddleston knows what he’s talking about — Loki has been killed off twice before and kept on coming back. Time, very literally, will tell.

Loki season 2 finale Easter egg may confirm who is Loki’s true love

One thing we didn’t get a definitive answer to in the Loki season 2 finale was “who is Loki’s real soulmate">Easter Egg it’s taken fans days to pick up on, though, may just confirm the true answer, as it sure looks like Time God Loki is wearing that blanket he and Sylvie cozied up under in season 1. Mobius monsters, don’t despair, though, as it was Loki’s connection with his TVA bestie that got him all teary-eyed in the show’s final scene, so who won out in the end, really? Well, not Loki, that’s for sure. Oh? Too soon? Sorry.

After 14 years, Tom Hiddleston’s tenure as Loki could very well be over. As the smartest show Marvel has ever made, Loki, did an irable job of giving context and character development to one of the MCU’s first villains.

Convinced that he was the rightful heir to Asgard, the God of Mischief went on a killing spree, harnessing the power of Chitauri aliens to attack New York. Even after it seemed as though he could be rehabilitated in Thor: The Dark World, he stabs his brother in the back time and time again. The end of Loki season 2 shows that Marvel can do wonders for character development given the right amount of time. After Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) kills He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), the Temporal Loom starts to melt down, causing a cataclysm that would unravel every branch of time into nothingness. Loki bends over backward to find a way to save all of time before realizing it is essentially hopeless. He Who Remains tells him that the Loom is a fail-safe. It is designed to preserve only The Sacred Timeline and nothing else. Even the Time Variance Authority would be collateral damage — as would Loki and the rest of his friends.

Loki makes the final step into redemption when he essentially sacrifices himself for the greater good. He destroys the Loom, taking on the mantle of the new He Who Remains. Though he has a throne that he always wanted, he comes to understand what it actually means to be burdened with glorious purpose. He keeps the timeline going, destined to be apart from his friends as the God of Time. Though we don’t want this to be the end, this is the perfect way to send off the character for good. But just to twist the knife even further, the final moments of the series call back to Thor in a beautiful show of foreshadowing.

Loki makes the ultimate sacrifice

In the first Thor film, Loki and his adopted brother could not be further apart. Loki envies Thor (Chris Hemsworth) as he is the favorite son and does everything he can to supplant him. But after Odin (Anthony Hopkins) sends Thir crashlanding into New Mexico, his plans go awry. Stranded among mortals, Thor becomes humbled by his humanity. When he returns, he makes an impossible decision to stop Loki from destroying Jotunheim. The only way to do that is to break the Bifrost. This decision is significant because it means he cannot see Jane (Natalie Portman) again. This move is selfless which Loki is not in a place to understand.

But after centuries at the TVA, Loki finally understands the right thing to do. Even though it means losing Mobius (Owen Wilson) and Sylvie, he understands that growing the timelines in solitude is the only way to save all universes. He and Thor decide to risk it all to save the people they love, but Loki’s decision is even harder than his brother’s. He understands that there is a reason that He Who Remains is alone in a tower. By saving the timeline, he will destroy all the new relationships he has cultivated. This moment is not only heartbreaking but has also been a long time coming.

When Loki moves against his brother in Thor, he does so with the belief this will give him love. Even after Thor defeats him, he believes he is in the right, stating that it was “for you. For all of us.” In the final episode of season 2, Loki says the same thing, but this time with a different context. When he tells Sylvie and Mobius this is “for you, for all of us,” he also acknowledges he is finally doing the right thing for the right reasons.

Even more tragic, it seems unclear whether anyone will know what he has done to save time. Arguably the one person who would benefit from Loki’s change of character the most is a brother he hasn’t seen in years. Thor would be the first person to rejoice at Loki doing the right thing, but as viewers, we will likely never see them reunite. There are no plans for a Loki season 3, and this is about as much of a cap on a season as any.

As He Who Remains once said in Loki, “The players gonna play, play, play, play, play, and the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Baby, I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake. I shake it off, I shake it off.” Wait, no, that was Taylor Swift — sorry, I keep getting them mixed up!

I mean, can you blame me? The Loki writers keep sneaking Taylor Swift lyrics into the show’s dialogues, and they’re always conveniently directed at Tom Hiddleston. Surely, this time it has to have been intentional.

Last time, Brad Wolfe/Hunter-X05 basically called Loki an “anti-hero” by way of paraphrasing the iconic chorus to the chart-topping Taylor Swift song. “It’s you, you’re the problem,” he told Loki, but we knew exactly what the writers were doing. Frankly, it was a perfect reference, since the newly-crowned God of Stories is the MCU’s most accomplished villain-turned-hero.

While we do concede that the second season of Loki was probably filmed before “Anti-Hero” had even been recorded, and maybe it was just an act of fate, the latest Taylor Swift Easter egg casually dropped by He Who Remains in the finale of the show could very well have been purposeful.

Allow me to refresh your memory, since not every brain is as hard-coded with Taylor Swift lyrics as mine, but there is a moment during the conversation between Loki and He Who Remains, at the Citadel at the End of Time, where the defeated Time Lord tells the former God of Mischief to “shake it off” after dropping some truth bombs (we won’t spoil it).

If I had a penny for every time someone quoted the pop princess’s music to Tom Hiddleston’s face in Loki, I would have exactly two pennies. It’s not much, but it’s weird that it happened twice. Poor guy is probably just trying to move on with his life, but much like Thanos, Taylor Swift is inevitable. Or maybe Marvel is just dropping hints that the Grammy-winning singer will soon suit up herself to the big leagues— at least, if the Deadpool 3 rumors are to be believed.

The second season of Marvel’s Loki is finally over, and Tom Hiddleston kept us hooked as the titular, wily god of mischief. As a god, it’s expected that Loki, just like Thor and Odin, is immortal. However, MCU fans have long debated on how old Loki is.

Now that Loki has put another adventure under his belt, a question that has been circling among fans is just how old the mischievous god is. Evidently, he’s older than the bulk of the faces we’ve seen in the MCU, as he’s not a mere mortal, nor is he an amplified mutant that ages. However, his exact age remains a mystery to most (which is understandable considering his flawless skin). With his various time jumps and skips, viewers have been introduced to multiple versions of the character across space and time. Even when he’s out on a rampage, it’s hard not to enjoy his childlike mischief. Nonetheless, to find out how old Loki is, we’ll have to break down his age across all his appearances in the MCU.

Loki’s MCU beginnings (The Thor movies) 

In the first installment of the Thor movies, we are introduced to the character, Loki. This is also where we find out that he is not a native Asgardian, but the abandoned son of the Frost Giant Laufey. He was adopted by Odin in the year 965AD, and was born around that time. Using that year, we can surmise that Loki was about 1,046 years old in the first Thor movie. 

After he failed to kill his brother, Loki was given the Mind Stone by Thanos, and sent to retrieve the stones that reside on Earth. Since the first Avengers movie takes place a year after Thor, we know that Loki was about 1,047 years old by that time. With another year ed, and another plan foiled, Loki decides to the good guys in Thor: The Dark World. At 1,048 years old, perhaps the God of Mischief finally decided to turn a new leaf. However, we see that this theory proves untrue, as Loki continues to scheme behind Thor’s back, faking his death yet again.

Believed to be dead after the events of The Dark World, Loki had secretly been impersonating his father, Odin, as the king of Asgard. Five years since we last saw him, Loki was 1,053 years old during the events of Thor: Ragnarok. This movie also sees the brothers reunited in the battle against their estranged and dangerous older sister, Hela.

Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame

The post-credit scene of Thor: Ragnarok led directly to the opening scenes of Avengers: Infinity War, which means the two take place in the same year. As a result, Loki is still 1,053. It is in this movie however, that Loki is finally killed by Thanos, who quips that there will be “no resurrections this time,” alluding to Loki’s two previous fake deaths.

Avengers Endgame sees the remaining Avengers who survived the snap travel back in time to reverse its effects. As they land in 2012, their mission doesn’t go exactly to plan, and the Loki of that time ends up with the Tesseract, allowing him to teleport out of his imprisonment. This in turn, kickstarts the events of the series, Loki.

So how old is Loki by the events of Loki?

While the first season of Loki was released after the Infinity Saga, the version of Loki we follow in the series is the one from Avengers: Endgame, who escaped with the Tesseract. This means that, in the first season of Loki, he is back to being 1,047 years old, just as he was in 2012. 

With all the time travel and jumping that has taken place in Loki, it is safe to say that determining how much time es in the show is impossible. His escapades outside of time have effectively rendered things, especially his age null and void. Nevertheless, we can give it our best shot based on what he goes through across the two seasons.

Seasons 1 and 2 take place back-to-back, likely taking up the equivalent of a few months for Loki’s personal experience. However, this changes in the season 2 finale in which the god has to spend “centuries” becoming an expert on temporal engineering in order to figure out how to fix the Temporal Loom. Unfortunately, it’s not specified how many centuries, but let’s hazard a guess that it’s at least above 300 years. So Loki could easily have caught up to his brother Thor at this point and be around 1,500 years old.

Whether he’s 1,053 or 1,500, though, the fact of the matter is that this god, just like his Norse mythology inspiration, is ageless and immortal.
