Who is iDubbbz and what is the ‘Content Cop’?

Wondering what's going on?

Trying to figure out some impenetrable but apparently very serious internet drama? Well, you’re in the right place. For a few days now, iDubbbz has been trending on X in relation to his video about YouTuber Ethan Klein.

This hour-long YouTube video is titled ‘Content Cop – H3’ ed by iDubbbz on Apr. 16 which already has 4.3 million views. So, what exactly is so dramatic here?

Who is iDubbbz and what is Content Cop?

Ian Kane Jomha, aka iDubbbz, is an American YouTuber, comedian, and content creator born October 1, 1990, in San Antonio, Texas. He rose to fame during the 2010s through his main channel, iDubbbzTV, which has over 7 million subscribers, alongside secondary channels iDubbbzTV2 and iDubbbzgames.

Much of his content consists of pointed and satirical critiques of internet culture. Content Cop, his most iconic series, called out YouTubers like RiceGum, Tana Mongeau, and Keemstar to huge success. Content Cop was praised for exposing hypocrisy and slammed for inciting hate campaigns against its targets. In 2023, iDubbbz unlisted the Content Cop videos and apologized for inciting toxicity, saying he was regretful over his past edgy humor.

Why is Content Cop back?

Enter Olive the Labrador Retriever, owned by YouTuber and former friend of iDubbbz Ethan Klein. In a podcast on Feb. 17, Klein insinuated that Olive had ed on the parasitic protozoa Giardia to Klein’s wife, son, and co-host. This didn’t happen, though it led to someone Klein suspects of being an online harasser calling S on Klein. Klein hit the roof and lashed out in all directions, specifically calling his former friend iDubbbz out for being “spineless” for not speaking up their defense.

iDubbbz and his wife Anisa initially expressed concern about Klein’s overall mental health, saying they didn’t want to get involved. The subsequent release of the hour-long video about Klein suggests they reconsidered that position.

So, the Content Cop video is essentially a response to Klein’s criticism. In the video, iDubbbz again suggests that Klein is suffering from an ongoing mental health episode, expresses sympathy for him and his family, and suggests he seek professional help. He also criticizes Klein for his repeated attacks on pro-Palestinian YouTubers like Hasan Piker (Klein’s former co-host), who Klein now sees as a terrorist er.

The fallout

As iDubbbz and Klein were close friends, many see this video as iDubbbz stabbing Klein in the back at a low moment. Yes, it’s arguable that the video has a sympathetic tone and ultimately wants Klein to resolve whatever mental health troubles he’s suffering, but perhaps the best way to do that is not in an hour-long public video.

As such, opinion is split. Though, to be frank, Klein’s increasingly erratic and manic behavior is concerning. The drama was already at a boiling point before this video and now it’s gone nuclear, so more is inevitably coming. Whatever else happens, I hope this has made even a little sense to outsiders.
