It seems like we’ve been getting inundated with some pretty lousy horror movies as of late, which leaves a lot of room for anyone who wants to make a genuinely frightening horror film to step right in to fill the gap. Perhaps that’s just what writer/director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) will do with his new horror flick Sinister.

So far, we’ve only been able to see a regular trailer for the film, but today, thanks to First Showing, we have the red band trailer which ups the creepiness factor considerably.

The official plot synopsis reads as follows:

Sinister is a frightening new thriller from the producer of the Paranormal Activity films and the writer-director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Ethan Hawke plays a true crime novelist who discovers a box of mysterious, disturbing home movies that plunge his family into a nightmarish experience of supernatural horror.

This looks like it actually has a chance of being pretty good. On top of mere first impressions, there’s also the 100% score the film is currently sitting on at Rotten Tomatoes to consider. Granted, this is based only on 13 reviews, but so far it’s being called “extremely effective,” “intelligent,” and “sophisticated.” Sounds like this in one horror fans need to mark on their calendar.

Sinister hits theaters on October 5th.
